Classical Music for Concert Band

Works of Gustav Holst, Johann Sebastian Bach and P.I. Tchaikovsky will be among those performed by the Brattleboro Legion band on Sunday, February 27, at 2 PM at the Latchis Center for the Performing Arts on Main Street in Brattleboro. Last year, the ensemble performed its first program composed solely of symphonic band music. This was a departure from tradition for the group that is most well-known for its performances of show tunes, lighter classics and stirring marches.

The members of this 45 piece band, who range in age from 13 to 81, often remind Director Bruce Corwin of their fondness for the more serious type of music that presents a different king of challenge for individual musicians and for the group as a whole. Corwin says, "The harder it is, the better they like it... this is a different side of the band." At last year's performance at the First Baptist Church, the band played to a full house of enthusiastic concert-goers. Given the success of last year's program, the group hopes to appeal to people who might not otherwise come to a Legion Band concert.

Tickets for the performance are $8 and may be purchased at Hearthstone Books in Putney and Maple Leave Music in Brattleboro. Tickets are also available at Baker's on Main Street and Putney Road, as well as from any band member and at the door.

For more information, call Bruce Corwin at (802) 254-4157 or Don Strange at (802) 254-7336.
